Ok, so maybe we’ve been a little too hard on nylon and nylon fasteners in the past here on the blog.  Nylon is such a wildly popular material.  We just wanted to make sure that people are weighing all of their material options before making a final choice.

Nylon 6/6 remains an excellent material for fasteners and components because it is inexpensive, ubiquitous, and relatively durable.  But chemical resisant?  

Well, you’re not going to find nylon 6/6 standing up to acids very well.  But don’t despair!  Nylon can withstand certain salts and organic solvents quite well.  In order to give you an idea of what nylon 6/6 can handle, here are two charts that sum up nylon 6/6’s chemical resistance quite nicely.

The following abbreviations are used for the ratings:

E=Excellent

G=Good

F=Fair

P=Poor

NR=Not Recommended

S=Solvent

Look at all those Unchanged/Excellent ratings!  Not half bad, am I right?  Now check out this chart of nylon 6/6’s chemical resistance to salts:

Plenty of Excellent chemical resistance ratings for nylon 6/6 on this second chart as well.  As you can see, there are plenty of chemicals that you could expose nylon fasteners to with no problems.  While it’s important to keep an open mind when choosing a new material, there’s no reason not to use nylon 6/6 if it’s the right choice for you!
