CPVC (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride) is a thermoplastic produced by chlorination of Polyvinyl
Chloride (PVC) resin. Major uses include: hot and cold water piping and
industrial fluid handling. CPVC shares most of the features and
properties of PVC. However, due to its extra chlorine atom, it is more
chemically resistant and has a higher maximum use temperature. It
performs especially well in acids and bases. However, it is readily
attacked by some organic solvents, such as MEK.
It is also readily workable, being easily
machined, welded, molded, and formed. Its useful continuous operating
temperature range extends from cryogenic to 180°F, with brief
excursions to 200°F. It is inherently flame retardant, with a UL rating
of V-O. One other outstanding feature is its cost, which is much lower
than other acid-resistant polymers, such as fluoroplastics.
Plastic
parts manufactured in CPVC are used in such industries as: Waste Water Treatment, Chemical Processing, Semiconductor
Manufacturing,
as well as in a host of other residential
and commercial
Industrial applications.
